"Solitude prevails in the city; not in the countryside. It lies not inside a singel person, but in the space and among people." This aphorism by Kiyoshi Miki, Japanese pre-war philosopher (1897-1945), rings a bell rather oddly. Is out time going back retrogressively? Out there in the city, politically and economically, conveniently packaged media and information seem to assure induvidal freedom. But in fact individuals are divided and confined. We are rapidly losing our physical capacity, as living organisms, to connect and exchange with others, the past and the world. One dance critig said last summer that " Dance Hakushu is one of the styles of resistance agains the trend of the society becoming a Gulag" What matters? Resist exploitation, resist being made to dance, but -to feel, think, search and to move with clear volition. We would look for the commonness and meaning that lie among, rather than blindly praising individual uniqueness. Why not juxtapose the concept being moved versus being solitary? To be moved not passively, but actively. If moved with deep sympathy, one would move in a concrete action. ... Our bodies will travel to infinite past and we will hear its resonance very near. Memory and the present moment will radically vibrate with each other ... ( Tomo Saito, Secretary General from Hakushu)
